How To Fill Your Home For Free With Gosine Removals
22nd June, 2014
Fill Your Home for Free is a popular C4 show hosted by Kirstie Allsopp. She does have some fabulous ideas for design and renovation but here in York we don’t have the same access to items as she does in London.
We also don’t have the luxury of choosing items from Kirstie’s shop for free, so just how do we do it in Yorkshire, when upsizing? With tips from Van Man York you can fill your home for free.
Ask Family and Friends
This may seem like scrounging, it’s not. There’s a very high chance that while you’re upsizing someone you know is de-cluttering. They will be thankful for finding a good home for their old furniture as it’s a win win situation for both of you.
Freecycle
Everyone raves about Freecycle and of course there are a lot of great items on there but I’ve found that you have to be regular member in order to benefit. People generally choose those they’ve communicated with before to give away their things, so it’s not always the best way. It’s still worth a look though.
There are pages popping up all over Facebook now the sales app has been launched, including pages such as “stuff for free in York”. As long as you can pick it up, people are usually happier to give items away as it saves them a tip to the trip.
Top Tip: If you amass a lot of items, hire and man with a van in York, as you’ll still save a lot of money and it will save you doing the heavy lifting yourself.
PreLoved
Preloved has a great free section as do:
- Gumtree
- Viva Street
Just don’t become side tracked as you could find you leave with a puppy instead!
Local Skips
BEWARE: Taking something from a skip without permission is considered theft
The local tip in York and Scarborough used to sell good condition unwanted items that were thrown out. Unfortunately the council stopped this which seems odd as it’s the best way of recycling.
Anyhow you can still find stuff for free in skips around the town, you just need to bury your pride and knock on the door to ask permission to take something away. 99% of people will be glad of the extra space it creates in their skip.
Van Man York recommends: Extra Skills
All free furniture can be upcycled with the most basic of skills. From painting with odds and ends of emulsion you have left over from decorating to adding some fabric or sanding the wood. If you’re in any doubt as to how much these easy tricks can add to the value of your free furniture try searching for vintage, upcycled or shabby chic furniture on the web, then gasp at the price tag!
Besides creative ways to fill your home, there are a number of necessary items for the first 24 hours after your house removal. Have a read of our guide here on what to have prepared; from toothbrushes and bedsheets, to tea and coffee.
