Moving house in York, or around the UK is an expensive experience when you consider mortgage fees, surveys, the cost of having an EPC certificate issued, estate agent fees and more. These are generally expected as being a major part of the financial commitment which comes with moving home. There are a number of moving house costs and expenses which also need to be considered and budgeted for to ensure that you aren’t caught out.
Moving House Costs Checklist
1. Royal Mail Diversion
While letting everyone know that you are moving in advance so that post will (hopefully) be delivered to your new address is part of the moving process most movers choose to have Royal Mail redirect any stray post to their new home, just to be sure.
Prices are currently set at £24 for up to three months for a single surname (August 2014 prices).
2. Removal Costs
How much your removals will cost will depend on how far you are moving and how many of the services offered you wish to take advantage of, for example a packing service as well as removals. Obtain a number of quotes before moving however remember to consider feedback and recommendations when making your final choice as the company you choose will be the one trusted with your precious belongings.
3. Pet Care
Moving may be especially stressful for pets and many movers choose to have their precious pets take a holiday away from the chaos during the move either with friends or family or at a cattery or kennels. These moving house costs need to be incorporated into your moving budget.
4. Temporary Accommodation
Occasionally it may be necessary to stay in a hotel or similar between moving from one house to another or perhaps even for a period longer than a day or two if there is a gap between the date you leave one residence and the date you are able to move into another. Research prices in advance and ensure these moving house costs are considered when arranging the move.
5. Cleaning Costs
When leaving a house and moving on it may be necessary to have carpets professionally cleaned and cookers and ovens given the once over. Some movers choose to book professional cleaners to clean prior to moving into a property or out of an old one to cut the stress associated with the move and this too needs to be budgeted for.
6. Hidden Costs
Most of these costs are obvious ones however there are other costs and charges which need to watched out for. Ensure that important parties are made aware of your change of address, especially government departments and the DVLA. Leaving these too long may result in penalties and fines. Take meter readings for your old and new properties, taking pictures if possible on moving day to ensure that you are only charged for what you have used. Remember to pay all bills and make arrangements or set reminders for any payments usually made manually during the moving period to eliminate the risk of late fees.
Moving is an expensive business however being aware of costs in advance and budgeting for them takes the sting out of them somewhat and is much preferable to being hit with an unexpected bill.
