10th May, 2017
When it comes to moving house in York it goes without saying that by the end of the process two things will be true:
- You will sincerely hope never to see another box ever again
- You will have become a champion list maker! A successful move comes down to planning.
This particular list details the accessories and equipment that are needed for a house move. While every house move is different, this collection will make moving easier, quicker and often cheaper in the long run.
Packing Boxes
One thing that you will never seem to have enough of are packing boxes. It is important to have a variety of sizes of boxes so that not only will everything fit; also so that heavier items may be stored in smaller boxes making them easier and safer to move. Buying boxes for moving may be expensive so try asking for some on your local Freecycle site, local Facebook page, ask friends and family and even supermarkets and local shops as often people are more than happy to pass these on.
Packaging
Putting items into boxes is easy, wrapping items properly, securing them and then putting them carefully into packing cases is harder, is time consuming and most definitely requires a variety and a volume of packing types. More box information can be found online here.
Again to keep costs low beg and borrow newspapers from friend’s recycling, recycle anything around your own home which will protect items and ask local stores if they have any paper, bubble wrap or miscellaneous packing materials they wish to recycle in your direction. Ensure that the packaging is fit for purpose and will adequately protect your belongs.
Packing Tools
When putting boxes together, packing items, securing belongings and sealing boxes ensure that you have a good supply of decent quality tape, packing materials, scissors, a stanley knife (or similar), string and a number of chunky black markers. Secure all boxes properly and mark them with the contents, which way up they need to go, which room they will go into and whether they are fragile. Brightly coloured fragile tape as well as a number of moving accessories and moving materials may often be bought from eBay and assorted retailers in bulk at a reasonable price.
A Large Lock Box
When moving home all of your items are deemed important and essential however there are a few pieces and documents that truly are irreplaceable. Secure all of these, including house documents, identification and valuables in a locked box somewhere safe while moving. if the box can’t be entrusted to someone locally then store it in your own transport or somewhere safe so that you have what you need to hand safe without having to check a dozen boxes for them.
Cleaning Materials
When leaving your old home and moving into your new one there is bound to be a number of cleaning jobs to do, particularly in the old property. Make the hoover and cleaning materials the last things to be packed so that a final clean may be done before leaving and unpack these first at the new spot to hoover and dust if needed before placing furniture.
Moving House In York: Provisions
Tea bags, coffee, a kettle, milk, coffee, sugar, biscuits, bin bags, phone chargers and most importantly toilet roll should all be in the moving day provision box. This could be renamed the life-saver box and will keep everyone going throughout the move.
With so much to remember during a house making a list detailing the provisions you will need throughout the process is essential. To cut this list significantly consider choosing a removal service which offers to pack all of your belongings for you.
