What To Avoid When Looking For Removals In York
30th July, 2014
There are many great companies offering removals in York but the internet has opened up opportunities for removal fraud. Sometimes these can be difficult to spot. Not only this but even the biggest removal companies have sneaky ways of making you pay more, and this isn’t just a few pounds, this is thousands that you could lose.
Here are some warning signs to look out for when hiring a removal company.
Avoid Sites Where Companies Bid for Work
These are ok for small removals such as a man with a van York, or moving items you’ve bought on eBay as the cost is relatively low. However, for moving your prized possessions it may be wise to exercise caution.
For instance, you won’t be able to see the full details of the removal company until you’ve paid a hefty deposit and by then it could be too late.
Avoid Removal Companies that Refuse to Meet
A good removal company will want to meet you and to see the items they will be moving, in order to give you an accurate quote while making sure they have the manpower they need on the day. Any removal firm that does not want to meet is hiding something. Can you really trust them to turn up?
No Company Numbers
You can quickly check online if a company’s VAT number is false, make sure you do before parting with any cash. A false VAT no means there’s probably not a company registered. They could take your money and run.
No Invoice
If a removals company asks for money without sending you a full detailed invoice, complete with their company registration number, walk away.
Terms and Conditions
Always check the terms and conditions, yes they’re lengthy but fraudulent companies have a habit of hiding things in there that help them swindle you out of your money.
Promises Not in Writing
Many removal companies will make promises over the phone but then fail to uphold them when push comes to shove. Make sure you have everything in writing so you have a paper trail should you need it.
No Registered Address
If the removal company doesn’t have a registered address, the chances are they’re not a removal company at all.
Removals Firms With Integrity
Browse the removal company’s website. Are they well established in their city? Have they dedicated the time and resources to helping their customers?
A good removal company will answer every question you have with a smile, they understand you’re parting with a lot of money and they know you need to feel reassured. If at any time you feel a little suspicious, investigate further.
